In reply to Randy Hunt. Hello Randy, this would be laser ablation. They are removing the hard anodized coating using the laser to reveal the aluminum underneath.

Before reading your article, I had no idea that there was a difference between laser marking and engraving. Thank you for clearing that up. It’s interesting to know that marking is less common and used for bar codes. I’ve actually been looking for a way to identify my products. Maybe this could be an option for me.

Thanks for the post. This is really helpful to understand the difference between the different types of engraving. It is crazy that the lasers can get so hot that it melts the material. I really like how fast the process can happen with laser etching, and how accurate the lasers are.

My husband’s company is coming out with a new product and they are trying to decide if they should have a laser marking or engraving done on it. I’ve been trying to help him to decide on that and so I am really glad that this post clearly explains the two. I really think that the product would definitely need a bar code and a logo on it and so laser marking might be what they should go with. However, I’m not too sure what the four types of laser marking are or what they look like. Could you please go into more detail about the differences of these four different types?

Learning about how laser engraving is different is different from laser etching is really interesting. I know that laser etching uses heat from the beam to melt the surface it’s cutting, so it’s good to know that laser engraving uses a laser beam to physically remove the surface of the material to a cavity until it can be seen at eye level. Reading about this process is pretty cool, since it involves causing the material to be vaporized. Thanks for the interesting read!
